In recent years, “big data”, business intelligence (BI), and the surrounding subject matter have become pretty buzzy. As a result, there are now an abundance of options for the business owner looking to build effective processes around their data, with niche solutions for every use-case, data source, and application type.

The State of Enterprise Business Intelligence in 2016Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms

Here at AppInsights, we like to stay up to speed on the greater trends in the Enterprise BI market. That’s why we look forward to Gartner’s annual “Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms” report.

As usual, this year’s report does a great job of pointing out major players, identifying how the Enterprise BI space has evolved over the last year and hypothesizing where it’s headed in the immediate future. Check out our major takeaways below:

The BI and analytics market keeps growing

Business leaders are acutely aware that data-driven decision making is essential if they hope to remain competitive in today’s market. As a result, new players continue to emerge with new and innovative solutions for a variety of use cases. According to Gartner, the market segment is “expected to sustain its 2014 growth rate of 5.8% through 2019.” Needless to say, the BI space is ripe with innovation and is far from maturing.

Decision making power has shifted

Rather than internal IT or development teams acting as the administrators of analytics platforms, non-technical team leads and executives are getting involved with the evaluation and implementation of these solutions. “Buying decisions are now being made, or at least heavily influenced, by business users that demand easy-to-use and easy-to-buy products that deliver clear business value”, says Gartner. Rather than patiently waiting for a quarterly report that was requested 3-4 weeks in advance, business users are demanding more streamlined access to all of their data via intuitive, UI-driven platforms.

Users demands more

Ease of use, power, and sophistication must now walk hand-in-hand for any BI solution that hopes to emerge as an industry leader in the coming years. The ultimate winners in this space will seamlessly combine an accessible interface with analytical agility and highly scalable data storage capabilities. As a result, new entrants tend to shy away from the challenge of enabling users to retrieve data from a multitude of critical sources. Instead, new solutions may “be limited to specific use cases, technical environments or application domains.”

More predictive power

Demand for predictive analytics, even from low-cost solutions, is on rise. Presenting data in a visually compelling and easily interpreted format is now the price of entry for BI and analytics platforms. Business users are eagerly awaiting a layer of intelligence that will identify anomalies or data-sets that require closer attention. From Gartner: “The automated identification of findings is key to enabling and expanding access to analytics to more users within the organization, and speeding the time to insight.”

What's Next?

Perhaps the most exciting takeaway from this year’s report is that the above bullets are not exclusive to the Enterprise BI market. We’re seeing similar market shifts in the SMB space, with users who have very similar expectations for their data-focused tools.

At AppInsights, we continue to innovate on our existing platform with the intention of bringing together the critical elements that characterize Gartner’s BI solution of the future: accessibility, flexibility, and scalability. We hope you’ll join us for the ride!
