My Story Interning as Build Master at AppHelp

By Philippe / Nov 21, 2014

As a software engineering student, interning at AppHelp has been a great experience both for my professional development as much as my personal growth.

I started my role as Build Master Intern at the beginning of September.  For the past 81 days, I’ve been helping to build Software Configuration Management (SCM) tools as well as automate various repetitive tasks, which has been a lot of fun!

What I’ve really liked about the experience is the balance between using different third-party software and coding my own tools to maintain the build system. It’s allowed me to experience firsthand how all the different components of the system work together.

An intense learning experience

I learned about tons of new tools and concepts that I wouldn’t have in school (Teamcity, Artifactory and VMware, to name a few). At the beginning of my internship, I admit, it was challenging for me to fully grasp what the build team’s role was within the company, even at a high level.

As I became more familiar and comfortable with my responsibilities, I was able to work autonomously and fix problems when they occurred–which was exactly what I was hoping to get from my internship. The fun (and rewarding) part is that everything I learned will clearly help me in school and beyond, from the technical programming concepts to the use of automation tools to help me work more efficiently.

Feeling like you are actually contributing to the company’s success

Not once did I feel like I was given leftover tasks that no one else felt like doing. On the contrary, right from the start, I was given new, challenging work that I felt was contributing to the big picture.

As an intern at AppHelp, you take part in all the meetings and tasks that your team does. Not once did I feel like I was given leftover tasks that no one else felt like doing. On the contrary, right from the start, I was given new, challenging work that I felt was contributing to the big picture.

Great work environment

We work in an open space (executives included!) which lends itself to the open and lively work atmosphere. The kitchen is fully stocked with good stuff (breakfast food, fresh fruit, drinks, coffee, snacks, etc). Fun is a big part of the AppHelp culture. We have a foosball, ping-pong and pool table. You can get massages, attend yoga or workout sessions. Every Friday, we have an informal staff meeting where people get together to share good news and announce new projects. Long story short, there’s never a dull moment.

Great location

AppHelp’s office is nestled in the center of downtown Montreal, right next to Place-des-Arts metro station. It’s very simple to come to work in the morning or to go grab a bite at lunch time!

If you enjoy real challenges and want to be part of something big, you are sure to fully enjoy an internship at AppHelp.

AppHelp is currently looking for a handful of top notch developers specialized in Java, full stack, web applications or front end development to join our team. See our careers page to learn more.
